Wind Industry Profile of

Strathy North 67 megawatt confirmed for Senvion

Senvion SE, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Suzlon Group, the world’s fifth-largest* manufacturer of wind turbines, has continued its strong start to 2014 with the signing of a major turbine deal with Scottish energy firm, SSE.

Hamburg/Edinburgh: This is the fourth contract with SSE and Senvion, and will see the manufacturer supplying turbines to SSE’s major new Strathy North Wind Farm, near the village of Strathy in Sutherland, Scotland.

Strathy North will consist of 33 Senvion MM82 turbines with a total rated output of 67.65 megawatt (MW). The site lies approximately seven km from Strathy village, Sutherland, in an area of commercial forestry plantation. The project received consent from Scottish Ministers in November 2011 and is now under construction. The turbines will be installed in early 2015 before a period of testing and commissioning. The site will be fully operational towards the end of 2015.

Raymond Gilfedder, Managing Director of Senvion Northern Europe, commented: “This is the fourth SSE wind farm in the north of Scotland that Senvion has supplied, and I believe this demonstrates the good working relationships and experience that Senvion and SSE have built up together. This major new order continues what has been an excellent start to the year for Senvion.”

Rod Crawford, SSE's Project Manager for Strathy North, said: "We are delighted to have appointed Senvion as our turbine supplier for the Strathy North project. They provide a quality product and are a reliable company in our experience, delivering to programme costs. In addition, we have helped facilitate Senvion's new Highland service base in Alness, and we look forward to helping deliver investment and employment opportunities to the north of Scotland as part of our partnership with them on this project.”

Senvion recently announced it had crossed the landmark 10 gigawatt (GW) of installed capacity worldwide, enough to supply 20 million people – or the entire population of Australia – with electricity for one year.
