Estonia plans to build one of the world’s largest offshore wind energy plants
Estonian transit and energy businessman Endel Siff’s company Baltic Blue Energy OÜ has submitted an application for building rights to the economy and communications ministry to build a wind farm in the sea between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa islands, that would be one of the biggest in the world, LETA/Saarte Hääl writes.
Baltic Blue Energy OÜ board member Endel Siff said that Estonia is among Europe’s leading states in wind resource, being only behind England in this respect. “Sea wind farms don’t disturb people and sea winds are stable,” said Siff.
Baltic Blue Energy OÜ open sea wind farm is planned to be located in the West Estonian coastal sea, in the area between South Western coast of Hiiumaa island and Northern coast of Saaremaa island. Although the application is for 388 wind turbines with total capacity of 2,716 MW, the company intends to build just 1,999 MW worth.
“We have applied for bigger capacity and bigger area to carry out wind studies there. After the studies we will choose the most suitable areas for building the wind energy park,” said wind energy park planner Karl Mägi, adding that it will take at least five more years till the start of construction.
