Wind Industry Profile of
Pakistan - Focus on wind energy required
These views were expressed by renowned expert on alternative energy Brig (Retd) Prof. Dr Nasim Khan, while addressing the inauguration ceremony of indigenously designed and locally fabricated wind turbine by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) at its Gharo Research Centre.
It is pertinent to mention here that the turbine, first of the project for ‘development of renewable energy’ has the capacity to produce 6KVA of electricity and was designed and prepared by Centre for Renewable Energy Research (CRER) head Dr Imran Amin, and his team of engineers and technicians of SZABIST Karachi.
We recommended the government to focus on wind energy and suggest all universities to do the same. It will not only resolve the issue of electricity deficit in the country but also bring a revolution in this regard as wind corridor of Pakistan had a capacity to generate 110 thousands megawatt electricity, as per the calculations of experts.
Dr Khan further said that during the last decade Pakistani experts have made several wonders. He said that focusing on wind energy in the said manner would help us to export electricity, instead of looking forward to other countries. He further said that focusing on alternative energy is the need of the hour for Pakistan. He concluded that Southern Sindh is located at an ideal location for generating wind energy, while upper Sindh could be used for installations to generate solar energy. He was of the view that installing windmills on massive scale with required capacity would significantly reduce the cost of wind electricity.
SZABIST Chancellor Dr Uzra Fazal, while addressing the ceremony, committed to acknowledge the recommendation of Dr. Khan in regard to taking measure to support research on renewable energy. She said that higher educational institutions and research works go hand in hand. She also praised the efforts of SZABIST team, who made it possible to install a wind turbine.
