Wind Industry Profile of

This week: Interview with Dr. Michael Schneider, Head of Product Management Motion Control Baumer Group

Windfair: Is the Wind Energy Industry a priority for your company? How so?

Dr. Michael Schneider: The Baumer Group is a leading international manufacturer of sensors and sensor solutions and a premier supplier of innovative high-class encoders and sensors for wind turbines.
Baumer identified the wind industry as a strategic market very early on. The close, more than 15-year collaboration with engineering companies and vendors of systems and components has created an unrivalled technology and product portfolio for most varied sensor tasks in wind power plants.

Windfair: How many employees does your company have?

Dr. Michael Schneider: Today, about 2500 people in 36 locations and 18 countries are employed at the Baumer Group.

Windfair: How many dedicated to Wind Energy?

Dr. Michael Schneider: Since many customers of ours are active in wind power, in nearly each division our experts with in-depth wind application knowhow are committed – from R&D to Application Engineering and International Sales. Furthermore, our customers benefit from the profound expertise provided by our Industry Segment Managers Wind established in all windpower-relevant countries round the globe.

Windfair: Do you have any new or upcoming Wind Energy Products or Services?

Dr. Michael Schneider: Our wind industry portfolio is continually updated to latest requirements to anticipate proactive, future-oriented solutions. Baumer offers new products for any encoder task in wind turbines. HOG 86 launched in 2011 now comes with both electric and fiber optic interface for simultaneous evaluation of generator speed both in nacelle and tower base without additional signal converter. Also for slip rings Baumer provides several product innovations, e.g. optical absolute encoder GBA2W with integrated high-resolution signal evaluation for precise speed control. primeCAM, a modular safety encoder with integrated electronic cams for nacelle movement control (yaw) to prevent excessive cable twisting evolved from a joint project in cooperation with the company B-command. Another focus is on bearingless encoders to fit even giant shaft diameters by simply buckling the sensing gauge onto the shaft like a belt. Though the portfolio is already unmatched in terms of variety, it will further expand by Baumer adding on more offshore-capable encoders for wind power stations.

Windfair: Do you have any special training programs for your employees?

Dr. Michael Schneider: For Baumer, training qualified and competent young people is one of the most important investments in the future. Besides commercial and technical training places we offer further career opportunities for students and young academics to write their dissertations or to enter the professional world by practical trainings in one of our locations. Of course, as technology leader with global distribution channels we know about the importance of continued vocational education. Comprehensive in-house training concepts completed by external courses specialize in related topics and requirements. When it comes to fostering up-and-coming experts, for example in the field of functional safety, our trainings and certifications incorporate the expertise of external trainers we have been collaborating with for many years. Particularly in strategic industries like windpower Baumer is committed to train qualified industry specialists. In all windpower-relevant countries, our Industry Segment Managers Wind are dedicated to industry and customer-specific requirements and act as an interface transferring the demands to our R&D. In addition, they are much sought-after experts to hold scientific lectures at related conventions.

Windfair: Tell us about your future developments. What can we expect in the years to come?

Dr. Michael Schneider: The windpower industry is faced with daunting challenges. Core topics like minimizing Cost of Energy and implementation of economically viable concepts for offshore wind farms call for product and technology innovations. For many years Baumer has been investing in customized windpower solutions to meet the demanding industry requirements in terms of quality, longevity and reliability. Baumer offers wearfree bearingless encoders with unrivalled signal quality for large shaft diameters to acquire the generator speed directly at the rotor. Corrosion-proof encoders and sensors with specialized, certified materials ensure reliable operation even under rough offshore conditions. Baumer encoders with lightning protection and integrated monitoring functionality Enhanced Monitoring System (EMS) will keep expensive downtime at a minimum. We continually update and extend our product portfolio, and backed by our competent sales teams round the globe we will further strengthen our global leadership position as sensor and encoder expert.

All products and solutions for the wind energy industry will be presented at the Husum WindEnergy, hall/booth 3G11.
