REpower signs contract for first wind project in Sardinia with three 3.2M114 turbines

-Largest turbine in terms of rotor diameter installed in Italy -First REpower project to be built in Sardinia -Installation and commissioning of three 3.2M114 turbines scheduled for second half of 2012

Milan, 20 July 2012. REpower Systems SE and Elettrostudio Energia, an Italian company developing facilities for renewable energy production, have signed a contract to build the wind farm Venti di Nurra in the city of Sassari on the island of Sardinia in Italy. For the German wind turbine manufacturer the contract is a new milestone in the Italian wind market, as Venti di Nurra
is the first REpower project in Sardinia and will also be the first project in Italy to be built with the REpower 3.2M114 turbines, the largest in Italy in terms of rotor diameter.

Carlo Schiapparelli, Managing Director of the company’s Italian subsidiary REpower Italia S.r.L., said: "We are delighted to announce our first project with the 3.2M114. This kind of turbine is a testament to our state-of-the-art wind technology, which contributes significantly to meeting the growing demand for electricity in Italy."

This latest-generation wind turbine with a power capacity of 3.2 MW and a hub height of 93 metres has a rotor diameter of 114 metres – the largest rotor diameter to be installed in Italy so far. The swept rotor area of 10.207 square metres allows for the energy yield to maximise while ensuring low noise emission and high productivity.

The 114 metre rotor is the key element that optimises the REpower turbine for maximum return from medium wind speeds, ideally suited for its location in the surroundings of the city of Sassari.

In addition, various pioneering technology elements – such as the variable-speed generator, the electric drive of the pitch control, the maximum environmental compatibility assured by an independent lubrication system for the blades and a protective apparatus against electromagnetic fields – ensure the high quality and reliability of the 3.2M114 turbine.

Earlier this year, REpower installed the most powerful turbines in Italy to date in the Vento di Vino wind farm in Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, composed of seven 3.4M104 turbines. Today, REpower Systems SE is again ready to beat a new record for the largest onshore turbine in terms of rotor diameter in Italy, confirming the company as one of the main players in the Italian wind market.
