This week: Acciona Windpower North America can drive down wind energy costs

Acciona Windpower has announced that the wind farm where it will be installing two of its AW-3000/116, 3MW wind turbines in Mechanicsville will be called Pioneer Grove Wind Farm

“The AW-3000 wind turbines at Pioneer Grove will produce more power, more efficiently than anything we’ve installed before,” Acciona Windpower North America CEO Joe Baker said. “With technology like the AW-3000, we can drive down wind energy costs and begin to take full advantage of our clean energy resources.”

Pioneer Grove’s construction is expected to be complete in the second half of 2012. The renewable energy power plant has a long-term power purchase agreement with Central Iowa Power Cooperative. Acciona introduced the enhanced AW-3000 machine with a 116-meter rotor diameter in 2011.

“The product launch touted the machine’s industry-leading power curve and the best cost of energy at sites with medium wind speeds, as well as its exceptional performance at almost any site, globally,” reads the release. The wind farm will utilize two different tower technologies: One tower will be constructed to a height of 92 meters, using steel, while the other tower uses an innovative concrete solution and will reach a height of 100 meters.

“The State of Iowa is a great place to do business,” said Baker. “Governor Branstad, Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham, and the leaders of Cedar and Johnson Counties have set new standards for how government and business can work together to achieve the common goals of creating new jobs and clean energy for Iowa and Iowans.”

In North America, we are divided into three business divisions that allow for a specific focus: ACCIONA Infrastructures, ACCIONA Agua and ACCIONA Energy.

- ACCIONA Infrastructures, our oldest business division, is engaged in projects in over 30 countries. These projects include building and developing renewable and sustainable roadways, hospitals, structures and housing.
- ACCIONA Agua is the world leader in desalination via reverse osmosis and reuse. Our Tampa Bay plant alone will supply 10 percent of the drinking water needed for that Florida region.
- ACCIONA Energy has been pioneering renewable energy for nearly 20 years and is active in all major renewable-energy solutions—solar, wind, biomass, biofuels and small hydro. All of these solutions led to ACCIONA Energy producing more than 17.7 billion KWh of electricity from renewable-energy sources in 2011 alone and thus avoiding 11.3 million tons of CO2 emissions.
