Wind Industry Profile of

This week: Acceleration Sensor for Wind Turbines from Pepperl+Fuchs

Wind turbines are exposed to varying wind forces but also to other influences like damages of the blades for example. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to keep track on these occurrences to fulfill the expected lifetime requirements.

Pepperl+Fuchs has developed an acceleration sensor, which can be delivered in executions for one or two axis measurement. The frequency range starts at 0 Hz and reaches up to 100 Hz. According to the individual needs of the application, it is possible to limit the measuring frequency range as well as the maximum force, which is default wise set to -2g … +2g.
Another main goal was the design of a very robust sensor with a working temperature range from -40°C to +85°C. The sealing of the housing enables protection grades of IP68 and IP69K. The shock impact resistance is specified at 100g and the enhanced noise immunity reaches 100 V/m. Thus the sensor is applicable for cold climate and offshore installations.
Since the sensor incorporates processor power, it is possible to realize customer specific features, such as the fixed programming of limit values. In this case additional digital outputs could be provided in addition to the 20 mA current output for the acceleration values. Other interface configurations could be discussed based on the technical feasibility.
