Wind Industry Profile of

This week: Non-contact magnetic encoder from Pepperl+Fuchs

Questions of live time are of utmost importance for wind turbine manufactures today

Mannheim, 15.02.2012. Especially moving mechanical parts are subject to wear and tear. Also electronic sensors can incorporate such parts, for example in the case of rotary encoders. It is fairly difficult to exactly determine the live time of these products, because it depends to a high degree on external influences like axial loads. Therefore, an ideal solution would be a device without bearings. This would also help to reach higher protection grades and better resistance against salty atmosphere or shock.

Pepperl+Fuchs offers a solution fulfilling these requirements in form of the MNI40. MNI stands for “Magnetic Non-contact Incremental” and describes an incremental encoder which uses an external magnetic wheel. Thus bearings and mechanical parts which are in direct contact have been omitted. The sensor housing is completely sealed and reaches protection grades of IP 67, 68 and 69K. An operating temperature can be tolerated in a range from -40°C to +100°C, which allows the application of this device in hot or cold climate as well as offshore environments.

The modern GMR (Giant Magneto Resistance) technology guaranties precision and reliability also under these demanding conditions. Depending on the selected magnetic wheel up to 3.600 pulses per revolution could be generated. The integrated assistance and self-diagnostic features deliver excellent support for the proper adjustment and operation of the sensor.
