South Korea - 2.5 GW of offshore wind energy underway
South Korea is investing 10.2 trillion won ($9 billion) to build a 2.5 GW offshore wind farm, Bloomberg reports.
The government-led wind power project, which is planned for the southwest coast of the Korean peninsula, will be led by the nation's largest generator, Korea Electric Power Corp., and will be developed in three stages: a 100 MW demonstration wind farm, which is expected to be complete by 2014; a 400 MW demonstration wind farm, scheduled for completion in 2016; and a 2 GW wind farm, which is slated to be finished by 2019, according to Bloomberg.
Suppliers for the wind turbines project include Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co., Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.
