NKT has finalized a turnkey offshore repair of the Baltic Cable connecting the power grids in Sweden and Germany after it was damaged due to external impact. The power cable system was restored within 29 days from the initial fault notification and is now back in full operation.

NKT recycles the material cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) used for insulation of power cables. For NKT, this is significant step in the ambition to reduce the carbon footprint of its low-, medium- and high-voltage power cable solutions.

NKT signs service agreement with TenneT for high-voltage cable systems

The German-Dutch power grid operator TenneT has awarded NKT a service contract covering cable jointing of offshore high-voltage power cables.

Yesterday, the new NKT cable-laying vessel was named NKT Victoria at a ceremony at the power cable plant in Karlskrona, Sweden. The act was carried out by the regional Governor of Blekinge and marks the starting point of a new era of NKT turnkey high-voltage offshore cable system capabilities.

A new world-record 640 kV extruded DC (Direct Current) cable system has been successfully tested and qualified by NKT Cables. The commercialisation of the first 640 kV extruded DC underground system with advanced material technology will increase the maximum power transmission of cable systems by 20% and allow better integration of distant renewable energy sources into the global energy systems.

nkt cables has been awarded a contract by TenneT for delivery and installation of the export cable systems for Netherlands’ grid connection system Borssele Alpha together with an option for Borssele Beta, in a consortium with Boskalis’ subsidiary VBMS.

nkt cables has entered into a purchase agreement to acquire ABB HV Cables, a wholly owned business of the ABB Group, at an enterprise value of EUR 712m (DKK 5.3bn). Including ABB HV Cables’ committed investment in a new, cutting-edge cable-laying vessel to be delivered and paid in Q1 2017 of EUR 124m (DKK 0.9bn), total enterprise value amounts to EUR 836m (DKK 6.2bn).

nkt cables has supplied the 72 kV connector which enables transmission of power from one of the two V164 8MW prototype wind turbines from MHI Vestas installed in Maade, near Esbjerg on Denmark’s west coast. The two wind turbines, which are the largest on the market, provide power to approximately 18,000 Danish households.
