NKT Victoria ready to operate on biofuel

NKT has certified its cable-laying Vessel NKT Victoria to use biofuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) significantly reducing the carbon footprint from her operations.

NKT has signed the order for the power cable system for the Polish offshore wind project Baltic Power. The project is important for the transition to renewable energy in Poland and the national ambitions of up to 11 GW offshore wind installed by 2040.

The order to deliver the HVDC export power cable system to the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm is now a firm award for NKT. The project is a key contribution to the transition to renewable energy in the UK.

NKT will soon sign the order for a 230 kV AC high-voltage export power cable system for the Polish project Baltic Power Offshore Wind Park with a capacity of up to 1.2 GW.

NKT will sign a joint venture agreement with Taiwanese cable company, Walsin Lihwa, to provide technical support for the construction of the first subsea power cable factory in Taiwan.

NKT is starting the manufacturing of high-voltage power cables in the new extrusion tower built at the Swedish high-voltage factory in Karlskrona in Q4 this year. The tower is a key part of the company’s ongoing investments in its high-voltage power cable business.

NKT will produce cables for Dogger Bank C, the third phase of the world’s largest offshore wind farm, using low-carbon copper sourced from a mine in Sweden. The initiative will reduce the carbon footprint of the HVDC power cables by more than 35 % and is part of NKT’s ambition to become a net-zero emissions company no later than 2050.

NKT has joined the Powering Net Zero Pact initiative together with a global group of energy sector companies to encourage collaboration at all tiers of the sector to deliver net zero and support decarbonization.

Production of the world’s longest high-voltage DC underground power cable system for partners in SuedLink, TenneT and TransnetBW, has started at the NKT factory in Karlskrona, Sweden.

NKT continues to support the transition to renewable energy in the UK by completing the power cable system connecting the Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm to shore. With a capacity of 1.3 GW Hornsea 2 will be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm when fully operational.

NKT has christened its new energy-efficient power cable barge being part of a larger investment program to support the growing demand in offshore wind industry. The barge NKT Agrippina is now ready for her maiden trip transporting power cables for the German offshore wind project Ostwind 2.

With a new service agreement NKT supports the Lithuanian TSO Litgrid with on- and offshore repairs of the Lithuanian part of the 300 kV XLPE HVDC interconnector NordBalt.

NKT was awarded the order to repair two interconnectors between Denmark and Norway. The operation has been successfully completed and the power cables Skagerrak 1 and 2 are now back in operation.

To meet the growing demand for power cables in the offshore industry NKT increases its capacity to transport and storage offshore power cables from its German factory in Cologne.

NKT has been awarded a contract of approx. EUR 235m (approx. DKK 1.75bn) by SSEN Transmission to deliver and install a high-voltage DC (direct current) interconnector to the Shetland HVDC Link project. The turnkey order comprises the manufacturing of approx. 2x260 km of 320 kV high-voltage DC on-and offshore power cables, installation by the cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria and protection of the cables.

NKT has finalized a turnkey offshore repair of the Baltic Cable connecting the power grids in Sweden and Germany after it was damaged due to external impact. The power cable system was restored within 29 days from the initial fault notification and is now back in full operation.

NKT recycles the material cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) used for insulation of power cables. For NKT, this is significant step in the ambition to reduce the carbon footprint of its low-, medium- and high-voltage power cable solutions.

NKT signs service agreement with TenneT for high-voltage cable systems

The German-Dutch power grid operator TenneT has awarded NKT a service contract covering cable jointing of offshore high-voltage power cables.

NKT has entered a Preferred Supplier Agreement (PSA) as main contractor for delivery and installation of high-voltage DC on- and offshore export cable systems to the prospective Dogger Bank offshore Wind Farms Creyke Beck A/B. The project is being developed as a joint venture by Equinor (50%) and SSE (50%).

NKT has signed an export cable Pre-Construction Agreement (PCA) for delivery and installation of export cable system to the prospective UK offshore wind farm project Inch Cape.

NKT has signed a Preferred Supplier Agreement (PSA) for delivery and installation of export and array cable systems to the prospective offshore wind farm project Triton Knoll.

Yesterday, the new NKT cable-laying vessel was named NKT Victoria at a ceremony at the power cable plant in Karlskrona, Sweden. The act was carried out by the regional Governor of Blekinge and marks the starting point of a new era of NKT turnkey high-voltage offshore cable system capabilities.

A new world-record 640 kV extruded DC (Direct Current) cable system has been successfully tested and qualified by NKT Cables. The commercialisation of the first 640 kV extruded DC underground system with advanced material technology will increase the maximum power transmission of cable systems by 20% and allow better integration of distant renewable energy sources into the global energy systems.
