A Special Purpose Company (SPC) made up of Venti Japan, Mitsubishi Power Corp and C-Tech will operate the wind farm once it is commissioned. The project will provide 66 MW of power, enough to power the equivalent of 40,000 homes in Japan. The deal also includes a 15-year service agreement for the wind farm, and GE will establish a satellite facility for service and maintenance in Akita. The Akita Katagami wind farm will have the country’s largest installation in terms of wind farm capacity of GE’s 3.2*-103 turbines, which were designed for Japan’s unique wind conditions and terrain. The turbines, which will be the largest class of wind turbines in Japan, feature strengthened drive trains, upgraded electrical systems, advanced lighting protection, and reinforced towers and blades. Japan has a strong demand for cost-competitive renewable energy, and the wind power produced from these turbines will generate power at a lower cost rather than previous models currently used in the region. “We are delighted to launch our 3.2-103 turbine in Japan for the Akita Katagami Wind Farm, and help the Akita prefecture move closer to their renewable energy goals,” said Pete McCabe, President & CEO of GE’s Onshore Wind Business. “By committing to provide the residents of Akita with affordable, reliable and sustainable wind power generation, and building a new, local service and maintenance facility, we will also help to bring jobs to the region.” “GE Renewable Energy is a leading wind turbine manufacturer and long term service and maintenance provider,” said Hiroyuki Sato, President Akita-Katagami Wind Farm LLS and Venti Japan Inc. and Akita Katagami. “GE’s expertise in global wind market would be valuable for Venti as we are working for indispensable projects one after another to further establish more competitive wind power business in Japan” GE is establishing itself as an important provider of wind turbines in Japan with more than 400 turbines installed and under construction in the country to date. The wind power project with a total output of 430 megawatts consists of 86 wind turbines operated by different partners. The turbines have not only been installed just off the coast in the IJsselmeer (nearshore) but also on land along the coastal dike (onshore). The combined output of these installations is sufficient to supply roughly 400,000 households a year with green electricity. The innogy Zuidwester wind farm with 90 megawatts of installed capacity is part of this enormous wind power project. Twelve of what are currently the world’s most powerful onshore turbines are now turning on this site. Built by turbine manufacturer ENERCON, each of the turbines has an output of 7.5 megawatts. In all, innogy has invested roughly €150 million in the Zuidwester wind farm. “We built Zuidwester at a wind site that has a long tradition and that has always placed great emphasis on pioneering spirit. The first – and, for their time, most advanced – turbines already began turning here in the 1980s. Significant progress has been made since then. Thanks to enormous advances in this technology, wind turbines have developed into one of the most cost-effective means of generating electricity – something that is clearly shown by the results of the latest wind auctions. That is why we are backing the continued expansion of wind energy and, in the process, making our contribution to the success of the European energy transition,” says Hans Bünting, Chief Operating Officer Renewables of innogy SE. Technical progress par excellence: sixfold increase in output at proven site The twelve state-of-the-art turbines of the Zuidwester wind farm replace 50 installations dating from the 1980s and 1990s. Statistically, one of the new turbines on its own can generate as much electricity as all 50 earlier models combined. The total installed capacity of the wind farm has increased sixfold from 15 to 90 megawatts; annual production has risen ten times. The new turbines have been operating at full capacity since the beginning of 2017 and feed enough climate-friendly electricity into the grid to supply approximately 80,000 households a year. Hans-Dieter Kettwig, CEO of ENERCON GmbH, says: “The Noordoostpolder wind energy project and its Zuidwester subproject demonstrate that, with regard to restructuring of the energy system, the renewables are pushing forward into large-scale industry dimensions and effectively use limited land resources. Renewable large-scale power plants like this make a vital contribution to the success of the energy transition. We are happy to have been able to implement this showcase project together with innogy, and that we received broad local support from all parties involved, including farmers and the population.” XXL turbine technology Building work for the Zuidwester wind farm began in March 2014 with the construction of the substation, the laying of the electricity cables and the building of the foundations and towers. Work on the first wind turbine was completed in autumn 2015. In a first step, the nacelle was placed on top of the hybrid tower at a height of 135 metres with a mobile lattice-boom crane that is currently one of the largest of its kind. This was followed by the 220-tonne generator and the hub with the central rotor section. The final step involved the mounting of the individual rotor blades, which have a diameter of 127 metres and sweep an area of 1.25 hectares – the equivalent of over 1.5 football pitches. The commissioning of all twelve turbines was carried out in stages, and since the beginning of 2017 all the turbines have been feeding green electricity into the grid. With a total height of 200 metres, the turbines are even taller than Cologne Cathedral (157 metres). ...

I would like to thank everyone we have spoken to for their contributions and patience as we carefully move towards the selection of final locations.  “The search areas have been chosen because we believe they offer the best opportunity to minimise impact – not least our early decision to lay underground the 60km transmission cables,” added Ruari.  The maps are online and are also in a newsletter sent today to over 35,000 residents in North Norfolk, Broadland and Breckland. Key points include:  Landfall for the transmission cable running from the wind farms, will be south of Happisburgh, as it avoids a Marine Conservation Zone and there is enough space at the landfall to accommodate the transmission cables from both projects  Two search areas for cable relay stations (CRS), if Vattenfall opts for High Voltage AC (HVAC) cables, west of Happisburgh, for co-location of onshore infrastructure. The sites enable relative seclusion, co-location of both, good access, opportunities to minimise visual impact through topography and screening  A search area for a substation to the north east of Necton village and to the east of existing infrastructure. This area offers relative seclusion, maximises distances from housing whilst maintaining proximity to National Grid, and opportunities to minimise visual impact through topography and screening  60km underground cable route search area from landfall to Necton shows local refinements   Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas will deliver on average enough fossil-fuel free electricity every year to meet the needs of almost 50% of the East of England. Ruari concluded:  “The infrastructure is needed to put Norfolk Vanguard’s and Norfolk Boreas’s fossil-fuel free, home grown electricity onto the National Grid. Getting the go ahead will trigger significant jobs opportunities in Norfolk and support action on climate change.”  Vattenfall will continue to engage with stakeholders and residents throughout the summer. Wind farm owners are faced with many challenges to increase availability and performance of wind turbines while driving down the costs. “Modern turbines are meeting the industry performance assumptions of 97% onshore and 94% offshore, but there is room for improvement and even higher performance can be reached by optimised operations driven by a well-managed operations and maintenance strategy,” says Kim Moerk, Executive Vice President Renewables Certification at DNV GL. When every megawatt counts, there is zero tolerance of any unexplained or unplanned underperformance. A strategy and best practices should be defined to achieve these ambitious goals. In collaboration with several wind energy stakeholders like operators, manufacturers and insurance companies, DNV GL will develop a recommended practice which will describe best methods for wind farm operations. Operational configuration and technical management will be addressed to define the optimal operational setup. “We are inviting all interested partners to work with us on capping costs and achieving best balance of capital expenditures and operational expenditures of wind farms,” says Fabio Pollicino, Vice President and Service Line Leader for Project Certification at DNV GL. “Only by joining forces and industry collaboration we can build this recommended practice to define an independent defined baseline for operators.
