Aqualis Offshore, a sister company to Offshore Wind Consultants Limited (OWC), has been awarded a contract by Ørsted (Formerly DONG Energy) to provide geotechnical site investigation supervision services at their Ocean Wind offshore wind farm. Aqualis, DONG Energy, offshore, geotechnical site investigation, US The contract also includes an option to provide similar geotechnical services at the Bay State Wind farm, which is jointly developed by Ørsted and Eversource. The contract values are undisclosed. Ocean Wind is a 160,480 acre offshore wind farm, located approximate 10 nautical miles off the coast of Atlantic City, New Jersey. The main scope of work is to provide supervision services for the geotechnical campaign and thereby support the further development of the site. “We have supported numerous Ørsted offshore wind farm projects in Europe, but this is our first project win in US waters. Reconnaissance level site survey has been carried out during summer of 2017, and we will now support the geotechnical investigation on site. Our team who is represented by employees both from our US Aqualis Offshore and UK OWC offices, will bring extensive experience in offshore ground investigation both from the European and North Sea offshore wind sector, and the US oil and gas sector,” says Ian Bonnon, managing director of OWC, which is part of Oslo-listed energy consultancy group Aqualis ASA. “We will be project managing the work out of our Aqualis Offshore’s Houston office.”  Aqualis Offshore’s contract also has an option for the provision of geotechnical site investigations support at the proposed Bay State Wind offshore wind farm. This wind farm is to be located approximately 15-25 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard in an area that has the potential to develop at least 2,000 megawatts of electricity – enough to power one million Massachusetts homes.  Ørsted and Eversource expect that first power can be delivered in the early 2020s.     Moog Offers Improved Safety of Its Leading-Edge Wind Turbine Pitch System Technology Certified by TÜV Rheinland to Lower Cost of Energy 10/20/2017
    .... “The safety built into Moog Pitch System 3 helps wind farm operators in three important ways,” says Dr. Tobias Theopold, Technology Development Manager Business Unit Wind, for Moog. “The technology avoids hazards from the wind turbine and therefore lowers the insurance fees for a wind farm operators. As the safety related development of Moog Pitch System 3 required an IEC 61508 and 13849 compliant V-model process including intensive failure insertion testing, this also boosts reliability of the overall product, which of course lowers downtime and reduces the Levelized Cost of Energy.” Moog established the benchmark for safety with its previous versions of the Moog Pitch Servo Drive when these were certified by TÜV Rheinland in 2012. With the Moog Pitch Servo Drive 3, Moog has received independent validation that this product will also perform outside the specification at extreme environmental conditions and in cases of unexpected failure. Along with certifying the safety of its new servo drive, Moog improved the architecture of Pitch System 3 to meet IEC 61508 and ISO 13849, standards governing wind turbine safety. First, Moog’s engineers provide a safety function referred to as Safe Feathering Run (SFR), which automatically moves and stops a turbine’s blades in the feathering position. Second, Moog included a Safe Stop function called (STOP1) to arrest the motion of an individual blade during manual movement of the blades. The Safe Stop function meets the ISO 13849 standard that addresses the requirements that blades must not perform an unintended move when people are working inside the wind turbine’s hub. “To protect a wind turbine against overvoltage from the grid and lightning strikes, we included a new component called the Moog Pitch Interface Module,” adds Theopold. “Our new interface module is a firewall to protect the blades against extreme environmental conditions and so called common cause failures (CCFs). These failures are most critical because they can affect each of the pitch axis and therefore can put turbine safety on risk.” Moog also asked lightning protection specialist DEHN to test Pitch System 3 (including its servo drive and interface module) inside a high voltage lab subjecting the system to multiple lightning strikes reaching more than 260,000 amps. The turbines are to be commissioned at the site in County Tyrone in summer 2018. Nordex has already gained considerable experience in this region, being one of the leading suppliers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland having already installed total wind power capacity of 750 MW there. NTR is a Dublin, Ireland based investor and asset owner in sustainable infrastructure that has, through its associated companies and funds, invested in circa 1.9GW of wind investments to date. The learnings from Hywind Scotland will pave the way for new global market opportunities for floating offshore wind energy. Through their government's support to develop the Hywind Scotland project, the UK and Scotland are now at the forefront of the development of this exciting new technology. Statoil looks forward to exploring the next steps for floating offshore wind,” says Irene Rummelhoff, executive vice president of the New Energy Solutions business area in Statoil. In an opening event in Aberdeen today the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon officially opens the world’s first floating wind farm. “I am delighted to open Hywind Scotland—the world’s first floating wind farm. The onshore operations and maintenance base for Hywind Scotland is located in Peterhead, while the operations center is located in Great Yarmouth. Linked to the Hywind Scotland project Statoil and partner Masdar will also install Batwind, a 1MWh Lithium battery storage solution for offshore wind energy. Battery storage has the potential to mitigate intermittency and optimise output. Crown Estate Scotland leases seabed to renewables developers and works to encourage development and attract investment. Sian Wilson of Crown Estate Scotland said: “It’s fantastic to see Hywind Scotland up and running. The project is a great success for the teams at Statoil and Masdar and for Scotland, where floating wind could really flourish due to our accessible deeper waters. We are committed to continuing our work to encourage floating offshore wind projects, which will in turn drive down costs, benefitting the whole sector—as well as the climate and consumers.” In recent years, there have been significant cost reductions in both the onshore and bottom fixed offshore wind sectors. Floating wind is expected to follow a similar downward trajectory over the next decade, making it cost competitive with other renewable energy sources. “Statoil has an ambition to reduce the costs of energy from the Hywind floating wind farm to € 40-60 €/MWh by 2030. Knowing that up to 80% of the offshore wind resources are in deep waters (+60 meters) where traditional bottom fixed installations are not suitable, floating offshore wind is expected to play a significant role in the growth of offshore wind going forward,” says Rummelhoff. Mohamed Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, is pointing to that future opportunities are already being assessed. “Masdar has a long-standing commitment to renewable energy in the United Kingdom, and we are immensely proud to deliver our first project in Scotland alongside our partners,” says Al Ramahi. “Hywind Scotland is showing that floating wind technology can be commercially viable wherever sea depths are too great for conventional fixed offshore wind power. This opens up a number of new geographies, and we are already looking at future opportunities with our partners, building on our existing international portfolio in onshore and offshore wind energy, and solar power,” he says. Hywind Scotland is adding to Statoil’s strong UK presence, and over the last few years Statoil’s footprint has grown in the UK. In Aberdeen over 1500 are employees in the final phase of commissioning the Mariner oil field, one of the largest upstream UKCS developments in the last ten years, due to come onstream in 2018. Statoil already has a sizeable renewables portfolio with an offshore wind portfolio with the capacity of providing over 1 million homes with renewable energy. Statoil operates the Sheringham Shoal wind farm in the UK, which has been in production since 2012. In 2016 Statoil also acquired 50% of the Arkona offshore wind farm in Germany, which will deliver power in 2019.
