SGS has participated as a delegate and an exhibitor at Power Week Asia since 2011 and returned this year as an industry league sponsor of the event, demonstrating SGS presence in the power and utilities sector in Malaysia and neighboring countries.

Power Week Asia:

Power Week Asia provides a unique platform for public and private power generating utilities, government bodies and policy makers and technology solution and service providers to exchange ideas on the issues challenging the power industry today. In addition, the congress is an ideal opportunity to network with industry colleagues and experts.

A Southeast Asia regional conference, Power Week Asia focuses on trends and challenges in the operation and maintenance of power plants. This year's event, held at the Novotel Kuala Lumpur Hotel on 27-28 August, hosted 74 delegates from Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

SGS Representation & Participation:

The SGS booth was staffed by Sri Royam-Power & Utilities Business Development Manager, Asia-Pacific; Rosli Bujang-Business Development Manager, Malaysia; Saravanan Maniam-Technical NDT Manager and Husin Ahmad- Power & Utilities Sales Manager, Malaysia. This dynamic team showcased the comprehensive SGS services portfolio for the power industry and offered visitors the insight into the worldwide SGS reputation of excellence.

Mr. Mohd Azam Saat, Head of NDT Division, SGS Malaysia, presented a paper entitled, “Phased Array in Lieu of Radiography for Weld Inspection of Small Bore Tubes” to an enthusiastic audience of industry delegates. In the presentation, Mr. Saat explained the phased array technology and argued its substantial reduction of down time for inspection as a significant value when compared to down time required to conduct radiography testing. Mr. Saat further strengthened his position by discussing an SGS project case study, displaying phased array equipment and demonstrating the technique to illustrate the potential benefit to power plant operation and maintenance.

SGS Non-Destructive Testing Services:

From construction sites, pipelines and refineries, to shipyards and nuclear power plants, the reliability of processes and equipment must be monitored and maintained at the highest standards. SGS NDT services offer complete or sample examination of assets using well-designed procedures and highly-trained and certified inspectors. SGS provides comprehensive and valuable data enabling project leaders to make informed asset management decisions.

SGS Malaysia presented its strong advanced NDT capabilities for the power industry. Because of their firm belief in sharing SGS expertise to successfully develop business, the Malaysian team considered the 2013 Power Week Asia Congress an important opportunity to demonstrate SGS competence in the region to attendees responsible for the operation and maintenance of power plants. SGS Malaysia established relationships with an impressive 80% of power plant operators who visited the booth and participated in the SGS presentations which have resulted in the quick and effective follow up of sales activities.

The Power Week Asia 2013 Congress was tremendously successful for SGS Malaysia, whose team skillfully highlighted SGS capabilities in advanced technology and worldwide reputation as a leader in delivering reliable services.

SGS is especially proud of its Malaysian team and congratulates them on a job well done.

Services Provided by SGS Wind Energy Services:

In an innovative initiative to provide value-added services, SGS Wind Energy Services has commenced to provide comprehensive occupational Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) auditing services globally. These services have been expanded to include Legal Mapping and Risk Management Advisory Services for offshore wind farms, in order to assist project owners and contractors in improving the HSSE management systems and operations of their wind farm projects.

Legal Mapping:

The new legal mapping service by SGS is designed to identify for clients the mandatory requirements and applicable regulations they must comply with in order to transport, store, install, commission and operate wind turbines in a specific country. The value of this service lies in SGS enabling of clients to build and operate wind farms in selected countries without breaching local legislations, and ensuring that all such issues are identified at an early stage in the project. Among the operational areas covered by the legal mapping services are road safety during transportation, special storage requirements for heavy equipment, working at heights, working under loads during installation, electrical safety compliance during commissioning of wind turbines and lift inspections during operation.

SGS Wind Energy completed its first legal mapping project in cooperation with SGS Bulgaria’s Industrial Services division. This pioneer legal mapping project proved to be a seamless example of collaboration between the managing office, SGS UK, and the executing office, SGS Bulgaria. The client recognized the value that SGS could bring to its projects; they commissioned a two-week HSE supervision service project for their onshore wind farm which has now been extended to four months.

Risk Management Advisory Services:

Another new service now offered by SGS Wind Energy is risk management advisory for offshore wind farms. SGS Wind Energy Risk Management Services are designed to assist the client in mitigating specific project risks at every stage of offshore wind farm projects, from conception through to operation. This is a high value-adding service for clients at the conceptual phase as it provides the necessary support for the decision to move ahead with a project or not. The service applies proven risk management techniques to identify, quantify, assess, simulate, mitigate and manage the risks in a project. It covers all stages of a project cycle including design, supplier capability and delivery time, availability of specialized sea-going transport, commissioning, as well as operations and maintenance.
