Ukraine - Wind energy could reach 10-15 GW in the long term

According to the expert, fulfillment of this potential requires more than 200 billion UAH of government subsidies

Capacity of wind energy in Ukraine could reach 10-15 GW in the long
term, Chairman of the Management Board of the Ukrainian Wind Energy
Association (UWEA) Andriy Konechenkov told. "In the next few years,
given the state of the power grids and substations, sound technical
potential of the domestic wind power is 7-8 GW or up to 12% of the total
power generation of the country.

From this point of view, the Black and the Azov seas -- especially east
of Crimea, where there is demand for electricity, are rather promising
areas. Other promising areas include Zaporozhia, Donetsk, Luhansk,
Mykolayiv, Odesa, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv regions," the expert said.

He added that the national wind energy potential could be described more
precisely, using the so-called wind atlas, which should contain data on
the movement of air masses.

"Its development has been lobbying at the state level, but so far
without success. Today we need a comprehensive program to study wind
potential in the areas, where we can develop wind power," the UWEA head
said.

Also, in his opinion, the share of "local element" (Ukrainian components
and services) in each project of renewable energy should be less than
15%. "For as long as there is no production of domestic effective power
equipment, it has to be purchased in the West. Of course, similar
domestic production must be maintained, however within reasonable limits
and that will cover part of the project, the roads, the foundations, and
labor," Konechenkov is sure.
