UK - Iberdrola, Vattenfall hand over $30m East Anglia deal to Wood Group

It has awarded the Scottish company Woods construction of two weather monitoring stations for its offshore wind power complex in East Anglia, for 23 million euros.

This offshore project will be built in British waters and will become one of the world's largest wind power developments, with up to 7,200 MW.Iberdrola has started, together with Swedish company Vattenfall, the development phase of the most important renewable energy project ever, the East Anglia offshore wind farm which will be built ¡n British waters.

Both companies have awarded a €23 million contract to Aberdeen based Woods Group for the fabrication, installation and operation of two weather monitoring stations on the coast of Norfolk and Suffolk. These infrastructures will be built by Steel Engineering, also a Scottish company, and they are expected to be located in British waters next summer.

Both stations will measure the wind speed and direction, as well as temperature and air pressure for an area bigger than Norfolk, which will enable key technical and engineering decisions for the wind farm to be taken. Once they come into operation they will be among the most technically advanced weather facilities in the United Kingdom. With this award, total investment in the East Anglia offshore wind farm which is currently in its preliminary development phase, amounts so far to 62 million euros, which shows the sheer size of this project.

The project has the potential to deliver 7,200MW of installed capacity, which is capable of generating enough clean green energy to power 5 million homes and will be one of the world's largest renewable energy projects. The promotion of offshore wind energy is a key platform of Iberdrola's future growth plans, seeking to lead the development of this technology, which it regards as a second renewable-energy revolution. To achieve this goal, the Company's Offshore Business Division, based in Scotland and offices in London, Berlin and Paris is developing its offshore wind project pipeline of over 11,000 MW across Northern Europe.

With renewable operations in 23 countries, IBERDROLA is the world leader in its sector by both installed capacity, with 14,100 MW at the end of June 2012, and output, with over 16.9 billion kilowatt hours generated in the first half of 2012.
