DeWind Co, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME), has been awarded the contract to supply five wind turbines to the 10 MW Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) research site on Prince Edward Island, Canada, north of the community of Tignish.

The project will be the flagship installation for the new 2 MW D9.2 wind turbine model being rolled out by DeWind Co during 2011. DeWind will provide the five D9.2 Wind Turbines from assembly contractor TECO-Westinghouse located in Round Rock, Texas.

Towers will be built and furnished by another DSME subsidiary, DSTN, a joint venture between DSME and the Province of Nova Scotia located in Trenton, about 90 minutes north of Halifax. DSTN was established in 2010 for the express purpose of manufacturing towers and blades for the wind industry.

The WEICan 10 MW site, located near the northern-most point of the island, is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The 2 MW DeWind D9.2 wind turbine is the latest refinement of the proven DeWind 2 MW wind turbine technology, dating back to 2002 when the first DeWind 2 MW wind turbines entered commercial operation. The robust design is well-suited for the challenges of the wind-swept Prince Edward Island site, and in the past has been installed in environments ranging from sea level to high elevations in excess of 14,000 ft., in climates ranging from desert heat to frigid cold. Currently DeWind 2 MW turbines are installed and operating in numerous locations in Europe, Asia, South America and the US.

About DSME:
DSME, established in 1973, is the world’s second largest shipbuilder. The DSME product portfolio includes commercial ships such as LNG carriers, oil tankers, containerships, LPG carriers, pure car carriers, offshore structures such as FPSO (Floating Production Storage & Offloading) vessels, drilling rigs, drill ships and fixed platforms; and naval vessels including submarines, destroyers, rescue ships and patrol boats.

About DeWind Co:
DeWind Co designs, produces and sells multi-megawatt wind turbines, including the 2 MW D9.2 model available in 60 Hz configuration, and the 2 MW D9.1 model in 50 Hz configuration. The D9.2 utilizes the advanced WinDrive(R) hydrodynamic torque converter developed by Voith AG, in combination with a fixed speed synchronous high voltage AC generator which can be connected directly to the grid without power conversion electronics.

About DSTN:
In March 2010 DSME and the Province of Nova Scotia announced their decision to establish a wind tower and blade manufacturing facility at a former railcar manufacturing site in Trenton, Nova Scotia. DSTN is the result of that decision. After extensive renovation and significant capital investment the DSTN site is now being taken through commissioning, and will be one of the most modern wind tower production facilities in North America when it is operational later this month.
